The FIBA World Cup 2023 Host
The governing body of basketball announced its intention to begin receiving proposals for the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup on June 7th, 2016. FIBA announced the hopefuls on June 1st, 2017 after Russia and Turkey opted out of bidding.
Indonesia, Japan, and the Philippines were announced as the future hosts of the FIBA World Cup on December 9. In preparation for the Group Stage of the FIBA World Cup 2023, all three countries have selected their own favorite teams to compete against one another. Unfortunately, Indonesia cannot proceed past this round.
In consultation with the host nations, the FIBA Central Board authorized the travel plans of the United States to the Philippines, Slovenia to Japan, and Canada to Indonesia. The United States has a great chance of joining Slovenia and Canada in qualifying if they win in the final window.
A host’s financial stake in a certain team’s performance need not affect the randomness of the team selection process.
